【 ANIMA! 】

“A miracle living now and here together” ー An immersive experience exploring the cycle of life and biodiversity
For the Signature Pavilion “LIVE EARTH JOURNEY” at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Bascule was responsible for concept development, creative direction, and production.
The central theme of the pavilion is: “A miracle living now and here together”
Bascule joined the project from its earliest conceptual stage. Working closely with Shoji Kawamori — anime director and vision creator — the team spent several years developing the pavilion under the guiding idea: “Life is fusion and transformation.”
The pavilion consists of six interconnected experiences.
By integrating interactive technologies such as mixed reality (MR), spatial audio, and haptics, the installations guide visitors into a deeply immersive environment where visuals, sound, and physical sensation overlap and interact.
【Super Dimensional Theater“499 Seconds – My Fusion”】
An immersive theater experience designed for 30 participants at a time, unlike anything else in the world.
Visitors wear VR headsets equipped with cameras, allowing them to move fluidly between VR and MR environments. Through this experience, they physically sense the cosmic-scale food chain as part of their own bodies.
At the heart of the experience lies Shoji Kawamori’s unique perspective on life: a food chain on a cosmic scale.
Beginning with microorganisms and moving through predation, symbiosis, decomposition, and regeneration, the experience reveals how the existence we call “myself” is in fact a continuous chain of fusion and transformation among countless forms of life.
The visual direction was led by IMAGICA EEX, while sound design was developed by SoVeC and Sony PCL.
A custom spatial audio system was created for the theater, combining intimate audio delivered through the VR headset with the large-scale speaker system surrounding the audience.
Bascule designed and developed the XR platform that integrates visuals, audio, and interactive systems.
The theme song “499 Seconds” was composed by Yoko Kanno.
Through precise synchronization of image, music, and vibration, the experience creates an entirely new perception of “the time of life.”
【Window to the Universe】
A large-scale visual installation presenting the many scales of life.
Visitors encounter dramatic imagery ranging from extreme close-ups of the Sun, the moment life develops inside an egg, the source of natural springs, the growth of moss, and microscopic organisms found in the waters of Osaka Bay.
From events lasting only seconds to processes unfolding over years, and from microscopic organisms to cosmic-scale phenomena spanning millions of kilometers, the installation reveals diverse forms of life on a 4.5-meter square ultra-high-resolution LED display.
During the Expo, the installation also presents a near real-time visualization of Earth.
Images captured every ten minutes by the Himawari weather satellite are processed using AI-based super-resolution technology and reconstructed into 22K-resolution Earth imagery, creating an unprecedentedly smooth and detailed view of “today’s Earth.”
This installation was realized through collaboration with numerous research institutions, including the Japan Meteorological Agency, NICT, and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, using a specially developed data infrastructure.
【ANIMA!】
An immersive audiovisual space combining the sound world of composer Yoko Kanno, interactive vibration, spatial audio, and projections on translucent scrims.
A floor-based haptic system reacts in real time to the movement of visitors, generating dynamic feedback that engages the senses directly.
The experience merges visuals, sound, and physical vibration into a unified environment, allowing visitors to feel a constantly transforming “musical of life” throughout their entire bodies.
【Infinite Metamorphosis】
An installation that allows visitors to observe the gradual decay of flowers inside four glass vessels known as Flower Compost.
The work was created in collaboration with Mikiko Kamada — artist, plants director, and Doctor of Agricultural Science.
The exhibition presents the actual flower compost vessels alongside time-lapse footage documenting their transformation, revealing the processes of decomposition and regeneration.
Through these living processes, the installation expresses the interconnectedness of life on Earth and the continuous circulation of matter within the ecosystem.
The goal of the installation is not simply to explain biological cycles as information, but to allow visitors to feel the circulation of life through direct sensory experience.
For this reason, the exhibition intentionally avoids relying solely on digital technology, instead presenting living processes themselves so that visitors can encounter the fundamental nature of life.
【Virtual “LIVE EARTH JOURNEY”】
Within the Expo’s virtual platform, the team explored how the experience of the physical pavilion could be extended into the digital world.
Through ongoing discussions with producer Shoji Kawamori, a central concept emerged: the “Life Sphere” (Inochi-dama), a symbolic form representing the interconnectedness of life.
Within this virtual world, diverse forms of life interact, support one another, and trigger chain reactions—embodying the idea of biodiversity as fusion and transformation.
Visitors can experience the pavilion’s message through uniquely virtual experiences, such as: transforming into different living creatures
restoring color and vitality to a world that has lost its life force
During the Expo, the team also hosted three live virtual tours guided by Kawamori himself, attracting large numbers of participants and generating enthusiastic responses.
